3 Ways to Emotionally Ground in Autumn

This time last year I was lucky enough to be asked to deliver a series of six workshops in a nursing home with older residents.

In thinking about ways to open up communication and familiarity, it struck me that using the actual theme of Autumn would allow residents to remember and enjoy something familiar without the possible distress of not remembering specific details.

That steady rhythm of colour, pattern, texture, smells, tastes and sounds is something that is ingrained in us from day one. While we might reach a stage where we don't call it Autumn anymore, experiencing those sensory inputs provides a joyous grounding in communal familiar activities. A common ground with others without verbal communication being necessary.

It struck me that in our busy lives as parents, siblings, workers, however we identify ourselves, the slowing down, noticing and sensory exploration of the seasons has definite benefits for us too.

I call this process grounding in nature - feeling safe, feeling like our feet are securely on the ground and bringing ourselves into this present moment. Here are a few ways to maximise your wellbeing as we move into Autumn.

  1. Get into Nature

Make a point at least once a week of getting to a park, a forest or a garden. If you are unable to walk, getting someone to drive us to a natural spot is perfect. If you are unable to get out of the house, you could watch a beautifully atmospheric video such as this one: https://youtu.be/6qxeqGEFDt4?si=8_rUhbxSSLWaR1Z4

  2. Notice

The New Economics Foundation carried out research to find out the everyday activities that improve our wellbeing. One of the five activities was to notice. It seems an odd activity but here's a way to practise it. Sit down when you are in nature or watching nature. Take five minutes to bring your attention to where you are. What can you see in terms of colours, shapes, patterns and textures? If the beauty brings you joy, notice that. Think to yourself "beautiful!" or "amazing". What can you hear, smell or touch? While you are doing this your mind might want to think about tonight's dinner or a problem you are experiencing. Gently bring yourself back, just for this five minutes to enjoy this experience. Reflect on how you feel afterwards.

  3. Take it home with you

If you find some fallen leaves, a pine cone, a conker, take it home and display it. Pop it somewhere you are regularly, like the kitchen or on a mantelpiece. Celebrate the item's beauty. Think about the magic of nature's cycle, that this happens only at one point in the year but that you've been able to enjoy it since your childhood.

There are many other ways to engage with the season in ways that promote your wellbeing. These are just a few of my favourite ideas. What are your favourite ways to experience Autumn in all its beauty?
